About
Sang Woo Kim is a British artist from Korean origins, and a model.
Sang Woo Kim moved to the United Kingdom at a very young age. Raised by traditional Korean parents, he always felt « other » in relation to the people around him. His oeuvre speaks of his fractured identity, as well as that of first generation migrants struggling with cultural duality. This sensitivity is poetically expressed in paintings composed of nostalgia and memories, not without a sense of humor. He seeks to surprise even disrupt. The question inherent in his work is what constitutes identity and to what extent it is real ? Identity takes on new forms in the modern world of media and networks, where a person's personality is a multi layered construct and can be created from scratch. Although all his works are autobiographical, he has only recently begun to paint self portraits. As a model, he is used to being looked at and photographed, and to being seen through someone else's lens. Self portraiture is therefore a way of reclaiming his identity.
